| BEAM Magazine No. 24 The Journal of the Irish Lighthouse Service. Volume 24. December 1995. Some years ago the former Irish Lights Motor Tender Nabro was purchased by Mr Patrick Conlan. Mr Conlan is a wood machinist by trade and runs his own timber business in Dublin. The vessel had been lying at the inner harbour on Sherkin Island off Baltimore, Co. Cork, in a very poor state of repair. After purchase Nabro was towed to Hegarty’s Boatyard at Old Court, near Skibbereen. The fall of the Roman Empire left all the southern part of Europe clear for the encroachment of the Northern barbaric races. The Scandinavian Norse-men, or Vikings, were one of these and they moved into and occupied all of Northern France. The French King at that time was in no fit state to resist them. He made peace and granted them large territory, later named the Duchy of Normandy, and they became known as the Normans. And there our story begins. |
