Draft Marine AtoN Strategy - 2025 and Beyond

2025 and Beyond is the United Kingdom and Ireland's marine aids to navigation (AtoN) strategy.

It has been prepared by the General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) of Trinity House, Northern Lighthouse Board and Irish Lights for their users, partners and stakeholders.

New Mizen Bridge!

Welcome boost for Mizen Head Tourism!

A contract for the construction of a new bridge to the Mizen Head Lighthouse has been signed and work will start right away with the new bridge ready for next summer's tourist season.

Minister Dempsey announces that the Light Dues rate from 1st August 2009 to 31st March 2010, has been increased from 52 to 57 cents

Minister Dempsey announces that the Light Dues rate from 1st August 2009 to 31st March 2010, has been increased from 52 to 57 cents per ton and the maximum number of voyages to be levied has been increased from 7 to 9 in any one year.   • Randal Lanigan O’Keeffe, who was a Deck Cadet on ILT Granuaile up to 2nd January 1995, was one of three cadets to win a Safety at Sea Awareness Award in a competition sponsored by NUMAST (the trade union for Merchant Navy and Airline Officers) and organised by the General Council of British Shipping.

    Some years ago the former Irish Lights Motor Tender Nabro was purchased by Mr Patrick Conlan. Mr Conlan is a wood machinist by trade and runs his own timber business in Dublin. The vessel had been lying at the inner harbour on Sherkin Island off Baltimore, Co. Cork, in a very poor state of repair. After purchase Nabro was towed to Hegarty’s Boatyard at Old Court, near Skibbereen.

    The fall of the Roman Empire left all the southern part of Europe clear for the encroachment of the Northern barbaric races. The Scandinavian Norse-men, or Vikings, were one of these and they moved into and occupied all of Northern France. The French King at that time was in no fit state to resist them. He made peace and granted them large territory, later named the Duchy of Normandy, and they became known as the Normans. And there our story begins.
