Draft Marine AtoN Strategy - 2025 and Beyond

2025 and Beyond is the United Kingdom and Ireland's marine aids to navigation (AtoN) strategy.

It has been prepared by the General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) of Trinity House, Northern Lighthouse Board and Irish Lights for their users, partners and stakeholders.

New Mizen Bridge!

Welcome boost for Mizen Head Tourism!

A contract for the construction of a new bridge to the Mizen Head Lighthouse has been signed and work will start right away with the new bridge ready for next summer's tourist season.

Minister Dempsey announces that the Light Dues rate from 1st August 2009 to 31st March 2010, has been increased from 52 to 57 cents

Minister Dempsey announces that the Light Dues rate from 1st August 2009 to 31st March 2010, has been increased from 52 to 57 cents per ton and the maximum number of voyages to be levied has been increased from 7 to 9 in any one year.   • In the early hours of 21st April 1998 an alarm was raised by the Remote Control and Monitoring System at the Lighthouse Depot, Dun Laoghaire, indicating that smoke had been detected in the Kish Lighthouse. As a result the automatic fire extinguishing system had been activated, the generators had shut down, and the station had switched over to emergency power.

    The General Lighthouse Authorities of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland--The Commissioners of Irish Lights, Trinity House and the Northern Lighthouse Board--will be providing an unencrypted Differential Global Positioning System (dgps) service.

  • The Lighthouse at Hook Head, Co Wexford, which was automated in April 1996, was built under charter by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, in 1245. This magnificent edifice which has stood, a benign sentinel over the tumultuous seas, for over 700 years will continue to aid mariners while assuming a new lease of life when the wonders of its rib-vaulted ceilings and the extra-mural chambers will be enjoyed by visitors and locals alike.

  • Blackrock Mayo is one of the most desolate lighthouses off the Irish coast. Before automation, when reliefs were carried out by local boat, it was the most difficult station at which to land. Reliefs often went weeks overdue. Frank Ryan tells of his own experiences in the early 1940s.

  • The Republic of Ireland's 500Hz Morse Radio Service will be discontinued on 31 December 1998 as part of the plan for implementing the new Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). The UK's service ended a year earlier.
