BEAM Magazine No. 29
The Journal of the Irish Lighthouse Service. Volume 29. 2000-2001.
  • Letter from the Chief Executive
  • The year 2000 has been a difficult one for Irish Lights. Fortunately there have also been some highlights to relish. In particular the commissioning of ILV Granuaile and the subsequent highly impressive performance of the vessel are very positive developments. We thank Hart Fenton, Damen Shipyards, and our own Irish Lights team led by Captain Shay Hickey for producing such a fine vessel.

  • Commissioners present binoculars to Kathleen Lynch of Clear Island
  • OUR SERVICE relies greatly on the good will and co-operation of many people around the coast who keep a weather eye out and let us know if they observe anything amiss. One of these is Mrs Kathleen Lynch of Clear Island.

  • Loran-C still needed to back up Satellite systems
  • IT IS PRACTICALLY certain that satellite navigation will be the preferred system of radionavigation for the foreseeable future. However, all expert authorities agree that a prudent mariner will not rely solely on a single system. Satellite navigation systems should, therefore, always be backed up and cross-checked by a fully independent alternative system.
  • Demise Of Decca
  • AFTER MORE THAN 50 years of providing radio positioning for mariners, the Decca Navigator System provided by the General Lighthouse Authorities ceased to operate at midnight on 31 March 2000. The Irish chain provided by Bórd Iascaigh Mhara was discontinued on 19 May 2000.
